design for six sigma (dfss) seems to be taking the corporate product development world by storm. several folks interested in interaction design have looked at it including jakob nielsen and peter merholz. a few days back my colleague vijay kumar and myself were presenting at one of the big companies adopting dfss and were approached afterward by numerous engineers and managers seeing the opportunity for several things we spoke about to help make six sigma more effective and efficient. we spoke of user-centered design for croteria development, a theory of prototyping, and visual displays of qualitative and quantitative data to improve decision-making. certainly many of the approaches in dfss are analogous to methodologies used at the instutute of design and elsewhere for many years. i am interested in seeing how we can contribute to the improvement of development processes as mainstream corporations adopt approaches like dfss.
